Tonbridge General Knowledge

While Tonbridge might be a small market town of just over 30,000 people, it has so much to offer. At just 30 miles from London, Tonbridge is easy to get to.

In 1087, the Doomsday Book listed Tonbridge with slightly different spelling – Tonebridge – while maps from the late 1870’s show a new spelling of Tunbridge. The name was changed to Tonbridge soon after to end confusion with local town Tunbridge Wells.

The town stands on high land which probably explains why Tonbridge Castle stands in such a strategic location. Henry VIII was the last of a long line of Kings that took over the castle.

Dame Kelly Holmes is one of the town’s most famous former residents. The double gold medal winner at the 2004 Athens Olympics went to school in the town. That’s a set of metal that will never be available for scrap.
