The Car Scrappage Scheme

Older cars can pose a threat to the environment. Ideally they should be scrapped and replaced by newer and more fuel efficient cars. That is why the government have decided to run the car scrappage scheme. If you scrap an eligible car when you buy a new one you will receive a £2,000 discount off the OTR price. The idea is great although we at Scrap Car Tonbridge believe there are flaws in the government's plan. For a start, you can only buy certain cars through the scheme when you scrap your old car. Plus, there are strict criteria that the car you are scrapping must meet. We have listed below the government's requirements.

The old, scrap car must:

  • Have a valid MOT (or within 14 days of expiry) on the old car at the time you order the new one
  • Be a small car or van weighing 3,500 kg or under
  • Have an in date (or within 14 days of expiry) tax disc when you purchase your new vehicle
  • Have been registered to you continuously for one year
  • Be registered in your name with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency or Driver and Vehicle Agency
  • Have a United Kingdom address on the registration certificate (also known as V5C)
  • Have been registered in the UK on or before 31st August, 1999
  • Still be insured when you purchase the new car

As you can see, the requirements for scrapping a car under the car scrappage scheme are rather harsh. Many people in Tonbridge who had hoped to profit from scrapping their car have been disappointed to learn that they did not meet the requirements.
